Lake Simcoe is about 30 km long and 25 km wide.
In early to mid-spring, many pike anglers fish the
shallow south end of Cook Bay with everything from big
spinners to minnows under floats. Big fish come off
weedlines from the mouth of the Holland River to
Keswick. During summer, pike move into 15- to 20 feet
(4.5- to 6 m) of water or more. Trolling big silver
crankbaits picks off suspended giants near dropoffs and
mid-bay humps in line with the mouth of Keswick's Jersey
River on the east side and Gilford on the west. Top
summer spots include Roches Point and Willow Beach.
Weedbeds off Virginia Beach also hold double-digit pike.
MNR staff stock about 150,000 whitefish and 100,000 lake
trout into the lake every year. The Talbot River drains into Lake Simcoe, connecting the
lake with the Kawartha Lakes system and Lake Ontario.
