There are endless shoals, weedy bays, sunken reefs and
weedy plateaus where Walleye congregate in vast numbers
on Lake Nipigon. In the spring the big trophy Walleyes
will be right up near shore in sandy areas or in the
streams and rivers because they are spawning. The
larger Walleyes tend to be in the deeper water and
around shoals and sunken reefs during the summer.
Big pike hang around shallow bays in June and early
July. Cast large bucktails or jerkbaits to weedbeds from
mid-August to mid-September, when the largest pike come
shallow and feed. The monsters hang around the deep
edges of rocky reefs and in backbays that have cabbage
beds. Lake Nipigon drains south into Lake Superior thru the
Nipigon River. Lake Nipigon is 90+ miles long and
65 miles wide. The lake freezes in late December
and the ice breaks up in late April to early May.
